Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is having the best season of his NBA career.
The young Canadian superstar has surpassed star center, Nikola Jokic who has been seen as the favorite to win the award, and is now in the driver’s seat for the NBA MVP.
Led by the 2x All-Star, the young Oklahoma City Thunder is the top team in the Western Conference, and after beating the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers two weeks has taken the mantle as the best team in the NBA so far this season.
Shai has performed this well without the second-best player on his team, Chet Holmgren has missed almost the entire season due to injury. Yet his absence hasn’t slowed the Thunder down in the least bit.
Shai has been playing out of his mind so far this season, averaging 32.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 6 apg, all career-highs. In the last five games, he’s had two 50-point performances (54 against Utah and 52 against Golden State).
If he continues this type of play and the Thunder keep winning, there’s no doubting who’s winning the MVP award.
And there just might be a Larry O’Brien trophy added to his trophy case at the end of this season as well.
