Last week, the Los Angeles Angels announced that manager Ron Washington was placed on indefinite leave due to health issues.
On Friday evening, general manager Perry Minasian announced that Washington would remain on medical leave for the remainder of the season as he battles an undisclosed health issue.
The news definitely hit the team hard, as Washington is loved by all.
“We want him here,” said Angels outfielder Mike Trout. “But we want him to get better.”
Washington was in the second year with the Angels, and had turned the team around after losing 99 games in year one. But, according to ESPN, the 73-year-old coach “experienced shortness of breath and appeared fatigued near the end of the team’s four-game series at Yankee Stadium, which ended June 19,.”
After returning to California for further tests, he was placed on indefinite medical leave.
“We’re going to take it day by day, and we’re going to do whatever he feels is the right thing to do,” Minasian said. “I’m not going to project going forward. Obviously, you’d love to have him around as much as you can. That’s a no-brainer. But with that being said, we’re going to do whatever’s best for him.”
Bench coach Ray Montgomery, who is in his fourth year in his position, will serve as interim manager for the team.
We send our best to coach Washington and hope that gets better soon.
