Sacramento St. Hires Mike Bibby As New Head Basketball Coach

Bibby takes over a struggling program.

Mike Bibby is returning to Sacramento, the city where he played his best pro ball, but this time as the head basketball coach at Sacramento State.

Bibby, who played for the Sacramento Kings for seven of his fourteen seasons, returns to Sacramento, where he averaged a career best 17.6 ppg.

He was hired by university president president Luke Wood, a university alum and the youngest president ever hired in the California State University system.

Wood has been aggressive in building up his athletic offerings. In December, he hired former UNLV offensive coordinator, Brennan Marion, as the Hornets’ new head football coach.

Now he brings in a former NBA player to bolster its basketball program, which has experienced only two winning seasons since moving up to DI in 1991-92.

It will be a challenge for Bibby, whose only previous coaching experience came as the head coach at his Alma mater, Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, where he won five state titles, including four straight championships.

Bibby inherits a team that went 7-25 this past season, so he definitely has his work cut out for him.

But Bibby has basketball in his blood, so it’s a challenge he will readily accept and dedicate himself to overcoming.
