Robert Saleh Returns As The 49ers’ Defensive Coordinator

Saleh is the 49ers DC once again

The San Francisco 49ers land a familiar face in Robert Saleh, who returns to his former position, defensive coordinator.

Saleh left the Bay area to become the head coach of the New York Jets in 2021. While the defense thrived during his time in New York, the offense sputtered and then fell apart after Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in the first game of the season in 2023.

After starting 2024 2-3, the Jets fired him, after which the team completely fell apart.

The 49ers parted ways with their previous defensive coordinator, Nick Sorenson after just one season. Although the defense led by Sorenson was amazing at not giving up yards, they ranked almost dead last at points allowed (29th).

Robert Saleh has been away from the San Francisco 49ers for four years but that
should not be a problem. During his first stint here with the 49ers, Salah built one of the best defenses in the NFL.

During his tenure, the 49ers’ defense ranked 10th in points allowed, 3rd in defensive efficiency, 2nd in yards allowed per play, and tied for 9th with 47 takeaways.
