The San Francisco 49ers are hiring former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris as their defensive coordinator.
Morris will be replacing Robert Saleh, who is now the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
This marks the 5th defensive coordinator for the 49ers in just 5 years.
Acquiring Raheem Morris, who becomes the 5th defensive coordination for the 49ers in five years, is a great move for this organization as Head coach Kyle Shanahan and Morris already have a close relationship.
These two coaches have had several coaching stints together starting with Washington in 2004-05 and most recently in Atlanta in 2015-16.
Morris joins the 49ers coaching staff after he spent the past two seasons as the head coach of the Falcons.
This will be Morris’ third time as defensive coordinator after previous stints with the Rams and Falcons, the former who he won a Super Bowl with.
San Francisco’s defense was ranked 13th in points allowed and 20th in yards allowed this past season, a remarkable achievement when you consider the team lost both All-Pros Nick Bosa and Fred Warner to season ending injuries.
With both of those leaders coming back the 49ers defense should be much improved. If they can remain healthy the 49ers will be a top defense under Morris.
